When Is the Best Time to Plant Mustard Greens? A Detailed Guide to Planting Precautions
As a leafy green vegetable, mustard greens have long been favored by consumers for their high nutritional value and good eating quality. There are many varieties of mustard greens, and variants such as kohlrabi, oil mustard greens, and zha cai frequently appear on people's dining tables. They can be ground into powder to make seasonings, and can also be pressed to extract mustard oil. So on a vegetable farmer's planting list, mustard greens are certainly among the ranks. Although mustard greens are much loved, when is the best time to plant mustard greens? And what are the precautions?
I. Suitable Planting Season for Mustard Greens
Because mustard greens are not tolerant of heat, cold, or frost, they are basically distributed in the Yangtze River and Huang-Huai regions; and precisely because of these characteristics, mustard greens are generally planted mainly in autumn. Sowing can begin from late July to early August, and must be completed by October at the latest. If earlier than this period, the mustard green seeds may fail to sprout due to drought and lack of water; if later than this period, the mustard green seeds may suffer frost damage due to cold waves.
II. Precautions for Weeding, Watering, and Fertilizing Mustard Greens
First, when sowing mustard green seeds, the weeds and debris on the land should be cleared away. Second, mustard green seeds are relatively small and are deeply affected by moisture, so soil and water moisture should be well maintained before sprouting. When watering, do not soak the soil all at once; small amounts at frequent intervals are best.
After broadcasting the mustard green seeds, the sprouting time for autumn sowing is about 3 to 4 days, while spring sowing takes longer, requiring about 7 to 15 days. Once the mustard greens have sprouted and grown two true leaves, the first topdressing can begin. Then, about one week before harvesting the mustard greens, carry out a second topdressing, which is basically enough to ensure the nutrition of the mustard greens. Finally, apply topdressing once after each harvest of mustard greens, which can extend the harvesting period of the mustard greens.
III. Precautions for Harvesting Mustard Greens
As mentioned earlier, the harvesting of mustard greens is done in batches. Each time, the larger mustard green plants should be picked first, while the smaller ones are left for the next harvest. Generally, mustard green seeds sown in early July to late August can be harvested for the first time about one month after sprouting, and can then be harvested 4 to 5 times; mustard green seeds sown in early October require one and a half to two months after sprouting before the first harvest, and can only be harvested 1 to 2 times.
As a vegetable with high nutritional value and a long harvesting period, mustard greens still have very important planting value. As long as you master the planting precautions and do not miss the planting time, harvesting mustard greens is still quite easy.
