The lily is a flower with very high ornamental value, and the bulbs it forms can be used as medicinal material. It is grown in many regions, so how do lilies produce seeds?

1. Seed propagation

Seed propagation is the most difficult of the lily propagation methods, because it requires long-term care, and only after the lily seeds take root and sprout can it be considered successful propagation. Moreover, there must be no carelessness at all during the growing process; if overwatering occurs, it will directly cause the plant to die.

2. Scale cuttings

In autumn, dig out the bulbs, break off the plump, thick scales from the old bulb one by one, and each scale base should carry a small part of the basal plate. Let them dry slightly in the shade, then insert them into a flower pot filled with river sand, with 2/3 of each scale inserted into the substrate. Keep the substrate at a certain humidity. At around 20°C, in about one and a half months, roots will grow from the wounded part of the scale.

3. Division propagation

This propagation method can only be used for certain varieties. The specific method is: in summer, when the bulbils mature, collect them, wrap them in moist fine sand, and then place them in a cool environment. By autumn, they can be planted in soil prepared in advance. Be careful that the depth is best around 3 or 4 cm, and the distance between each row can be 12 to 15. After planting, spread a layer of fine soil on top and cover with a straw mat.

4. Small bulbil division method

Usually there are some small bulbs growing around the outside of the old bulb. When harvesting lilies in September-October, these small bulbs can be separated and stored in sand indoors to overwinter. The following spring, plant them in pots. After growing until September-October of the 3rd year, they can grow into large bulbs and be cultivated into large plants.
