Garlic maggots, also known as the onion bulb fly, onion maggots, onion flies, etc., mainly damage the false stem and bulb of garlic plants, and can cause rot of garlic seedlings, yellowing and wilting of leaves, and even death of entire patches. This pest is very common in the main garlic-producing areas, so after this pest occurs, what pesticide should be used to treat it?

1. Control of garlic maggots

After temperatures continue to rise in April, garlic maggots will begin to run rampant in garlic-producing areas. Especially after rainy days, the damage from garlic maggots will worsen. If control is not timely, it will reduce the quality of garlic, causing loose cloves, red-skinned garlic, and other problems that affect garlic farmers' income. Timely prevention can effectively reduce disease, promote improvement in garlic quality, and increase the marketability of garlic.

The main chemical control measures are as follows: for pre-sowing treatment, use 0.5 kg of dimethoate emulsion mixed with 3 kg of water; after dilution, it can be mixed with 100 kg of garlic cloves. Alternatively, use 1.5 kg to 2 kg of trichlorfon powder per 667 sq m, mix with 25 kg of fine dry soil, and spread it in the furrows for soil disinfection. During the adult occurrence period, spray 50% dichlorvos or 50% phoxim at 1000 times dilution to kill adults. During the larval occurrence period, use "Garlic Maggot Yibianjing" or 48% chlorpyrifos emulsion at 1500 times dilution, 52.25% Nongdile emulsion at 1500 times dilution, 50% phoxim at 800 times dilution, or 90% trichlorfon at 1000 times dilution to drench the roots, once every 7 to 10 days, for two or three consecutive applications.

2. Cultivation of garlic

Garlic originated in Central Asia and the Mediterranean region and was introduced to China during the Han Dynasty. It is now widely cultivated in China, with major production areas including Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan, Sichuan, and Shaanxi. China's total garlic output now ranks first in the world. Garlic is generally sown from late September to early October each year. When planting garlic, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied, and topdressing should be carried out at the seedling stage, the flower stalk elongation stage, and the garlic bulb enlargement stage, generally using special compound fertilizer for garlic. In addition, at all stages after garlic sowing, the soil should be kept sufficiently moist but not waterlogged, and watering should stop 5 days before harvest.

The above is some relevant knowledge about garlic cultivation. When growing garlic, patrol the field more often and observe carefully. After garlic maggots appear, control them promptly to avoid reducing yield.
