Although asparagus fern (Asparagus setaceus) is not a bamboo, its leaves are soft and delicate, remaining green all year round, and its stems have joints and resemble bamboo in appearance. But compared with the upright bamboo, it displays an elegant and unrestrained posture, so it is called asparagus fern. So, what are the care methods and pruning techniques for asparagus fern?

Although asparagus fern is not a bamboo, its leaves are soft and delicate, remaining green all year round, and its stems have joints and resemble bamboo in appearance. But compared with the upright bamboo, it displays an elegant and unrestrained posture, so it is called asparagus fern. So, what are the care methods and pruning techniques for asparagus fern?

I. Care Methods for Asparagus Fern

1. Temperature

Asparagus fern prefers a warm environment. The suitable temperature for growth is 15°C-25°C. In summer, when the temperature is higher than 32°C, it will stop growing. In winter, the temperature is best kept above 10°C; below 5°C it will suffer cold damage.

2. Light

Asparagus fern prefers a semi-shaded environment. It is best placed indoors with diffused light. Except in winter, it must not be placed in direct sunlight during the other seasons, especially in summer, when it must never be exposed to scorching sun. During the flowering period, it fears both wind and rain, and at the same time needs good ventilation, otherwise it will drop flowers and fail to set seed.

3. Water

Asparagus fern likes moisture, but avoid overwatering. Too much water will cause the root system to rot. The higher the air humidity, the better. In hot weather, frequently spray water on the ground around the plant and on the branches and leaves to increase air humidity. The potting soil must not be too dry either; being too dry will cause the asparagus fern to wither.

Watering method: in spring and autumn, water once every 3-5 days; in summer, water once every 2 days; in winter, when the temperature is low, reduce the amount of watering to avoid freezing and damaging the rhizomes. At the same time, note that the water temperature should be as close as possible to the surrounding temperature.

4. Soil

Asparagus fern likes loose, fertile soil, and it also has relatively high requirements for drainage. It is best to choose humus soil, peat soil and other loose soils with good drainage that are rich in humus. A little organic fertilizer can be added to the soil, which will be more beneficial to the plant's growth.

5. Fertilizer

Although asparagus fern is not a fertilizer-loving plant, it cannot lack fertilizer either. Fertilizer should be applied lightly and frequently; never apply concentrated fertilizer, otherwise the branches and leaves are prone to turning yellow. In the spring and summer growing seasons, mainly use nitrogen fertilizer, and apply a thin, fully decomposed liquid fertilizer once a month. Once the plant has taken shape, fertilizer application should be appropriately controlled to avoid excessive growth and preserve an attractive plant shape.

II. What Are the Pruning Techniques for Asparagus Fern?

1. Pot control method

The size ratio between the flower pot and the plant should be 1:3, which can restrict root growth and keep the plant size unchanged

2. Remove the growing point

When a new shoot grows to 2-3cm, remove the growing point. This can promote new branches and leaves on the stem and can control it from growing vines, making the branches and leaves spread out flat and the plant shape continuously fuller.

3. Use the phototropism of asparagus fern

Turning the direction of the flower pot at the right time can correct the growth shape of the branches and leaves and keep the plant shape unchanged.

4. Physical obstruction method

That is, use a piece of cardboard to press down on the branches and leaves or block the sunlight, so that when the branches and leaves grow, upon encountering the obstruction they turn or bend, thereby achieving the purpose of shaping.

Asparagus fern is a plant with extremely high ornamental value. It has a light and graceful form, an elegant and unrestrained posture, and is refined and quiet. It can be placed in the living room or study, adding a scholarly atmosphere.
