Is red-flowered honeysuckle a deciduous or evergreen shrub?
Red-flowered honeysuckle generally refers to red-flowered rock honeysuckle, with green leaves and red flowers, very striking, and is a spring and summer flowering shrub. So is it a deciduous or evergreen shrub?
1. Is red-flowered honeysuckle a deciduous or evergreen shrub?
Red-flowered honeysuckle is a deciduous shrub, up to 1.5-2.5 m tall, sometimes only 10-20 cm in high-altitude areas. The flowering period is May-August, and the fruit ripening period is August-October. It grows on mountain slopes in shrub thickets, forest edges or river floodplains at an altitude of 2000-4600 m.
2. What are the propagation methods for red-flowered honeysuckle?
1. Sowing
(1) Red-flowered rock honeysuckle is suitable for growing in loam with good drainage, deep soil, loose texture, high organic matter content, and a pH of 6-7. Before sowing, apply 500-2500 kg of farmyard manure and 38 kg of compound fertilizer per mu. Rake level, break up the soil finely, and sow in beds running north-south with a bed width of 90 cm.
(2) Collect seeds in October, store them in sand over winter, and sow in the following spring. Before sowing, soak the seeds in 25°C warm water for 1 day, and sow when the seeds crack and show white. They germinate 10-15 days after sowing.
2. Cuttings
Best done during the plum rain season. Cut 1-year-old branches that are vigorous and free of pests and diseases as cuttings. The cuttings should be 0.5-1.0 cm thick and 15-20 cm long, with the lower cut made at a slant and the upper cut made flat, with the cuts 0.5-1.0 cm outside a bud. Insert them into a sand bed. They root 15-20 days after insertion and are transplanted the following year.
3. Division and transplanting
Transplant in spring, using 2-3 cutting seedlings or sowing seedlings as one clump. Fertilize 2-3 times during the growing period and keep the soil moist. After leaf fall in autumn and winter, carry out shaping and pruning, and pay attention to pest control during the growing period.
4. Layering
It can be done in summer and autumn.
