In agricultural production, various reasons can cause insect damage of varying degrees to vegetables, fruit trees, grain crops, and so on. Once insect damage occurs and is not dealt with in time, growers will face reduced yields or reduced quality. So what are the methods for trapping and killing agricultural pests?

1. Light trapping and killing

Most pests have a strong phototaxis, and are especially sensitive to ultraviolet light. The trapping and killing effect is very good, and it can trap and kill many kinds of pests, such as pests of Lepidoptera, Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, and so on. Blacklight trapping of insects is generally done during the adult pest emergence period from May to September, with one blacklight lamp set per mu, turned on at 9 p.m. each night and turned off the next morning. The largest number of insects is trapped on windless, muggy nights.

2. Sugar-vinegar liquid trapping and killing

6 parts sugar, 1 part liquor, 2—3 parts vinegar, 10 parts water. Add an appropriate amount of insecticide. It can trap and kill cutworms, tobacco cutworms, armyworms, and so on. Put the prepared trapping liquid in a basin, keep it 3—5 cm deep, and place one basin per mu (the basin must be 30 cm higher than the crops), continuing for 15 days.

3. Poison bait trapping and killing

Grind wheat bran, cottonseed, and soybean cake into bait, stir-fry until fragrant, add 0.15 kg of a 30-fold dilution of 90% trichlorfon crystals to every 5 kg of bait, and add an appropriate amount of water and mix well. Apply 1.5~2.5 kg per mu to trap and kill underground pests such as mole crickets and cutworms. Mix 40 parts banana peel or pineapple peel with 0.5 part 90% trichlorfon crystals and add water to make a paste, set 20 points per mu, and place 25 grams at each point to trap and kill pests such as fruit flies. During the occurrence period of cutworm larvae, collect fresh tender grass, dissolve 50 grams of 90% trichlorfon crystals in 1 kg of warm water, then spray it evenly on the tender grass, and place it beside the damaged plants and scatter it between crop rows in the evening for poison bait trapping and killing. Dig a 30~60 cm square soil pit at the edge of the field, put horse manure inside, and scatter a little trichlorfon powder under the manure to trap and kill mole crickets. Water jars can also be set in the field, with a small amount of sesame oil and insecticide dripped into the jars, which also has a certain trapping and killing effect.

4. Willow branch trapping and killing

Take semi-withered willow branches and elm branches about half a meter long, tie every 10 into a bundle, dip them in insecticide, tie one end to a wooden stick and insert it into the ground, inserting 5---10 bundles per mu. It can trap and kill adults such as armyworms and tobacco cutworms.

5. Straw bundles for trapping eggs

Adult armyworms have a tendency toward yellow and like to lay eggs on yellow withered grass. Rice straw or millet straw, etc. can be tied into bundles as thick as a bowl mouth, threaded with a small wooden stick (70~80 cm long), and one end inserted in the wheat field (insert 10~20 bundles per mu), to attract moths to gather on the bundles and lay eggs. Replace with new bundles after 5~7 days, and take the old bundles back and burn them. Insert the bundles 2~3 times in succession.

6. Yellow board trapping and killing

Use cardboard or fiberboard, etc., about 10 cm long and about 2—3 cm wide, paint it yellow with paint, then coat it with a layer of sticky oil, place about 20 pieces per mu in the field at the same height as the plants, and it can effectively trap and kill whiteflies, aphids, leafminers, and so on. When the board is fully covered with insects, recoat the sticky oil in time, generally recoating after about 7 days.
