Lemon Tree Planting Methods and Solutions for Yellowing Leaves
Lemon is a fruit with a very sour taste, yellow skin, and plenty of juice, with a rich fruity fragrance. However, it is hard for most people to eat lemons raw directly; they are mostly used to add flavor to food or to make fruit drinks, and are deeply loved by consumers. Lemon is relatively common in Guangdong and Guangxi, Taiwan, China, Fujian, and other places in our country, so how do you plant a lemon tree? What should you do if the leaves turn yellow?
1. How do you plant a lemon tree?
1. Seed selection
You must choose good seeds. As with many fruits, the lemons currently grown also come in many varieties. Different varieties have different adaptability to the environment, and quite a few varieties are only suitable for planting within a relatively small range; once outside this range, they grow poorly, or at least cannot achieve sufficient yield. So when choosing varieties, you need to be careful. It is best not to buy seedlings from too far away, because then you may buy lemon tree species that are not suitable for the local area. In addition, different varieties produce lemons that differ greatly in appearance and quality.
2. Planting
It is best to choose to plant in winter. Generally, planting can be carried out at a row spacing of 3 m. This is the most important point and must be grasped well. Generally, 56 trees can be planted per mu, which can achieve preliminary mass production. For the planting technique, you can put a layer of livestock manure on top. When the temperature is relatively suitable and the rain is relatively abundant, planting at any time is better. When planting, you can water according to the weather conditions to keep the soil at a relatively good level of moisture. These points are also very important.
3. Water and fertilizer
Managing fertilizer and water is also a very important point. After young trees are planted, topdressing is generally carried out in the second year, which can promote the formation of the canopy. This step is also very important. We can also add some livestock manure, and apply fertilizer together with phosphate fertilizer. After fertilizing, water thoroughly, because lemon trees are not drought-tolerant.
4. Pruning
Generally, lemon trees grow very well, but during the growth process, other branches and leaves inevitably grow, so they must be pruned regularly. When the lemon blooms, prune the branches and trunk promptly, and the lemon will also grow especially beautifully. During pruning, the technique must be light, not heavy. The flower preservation process of the lemon tree is also very important; it can inhibit the growth of shoots and promote flower bud flowering.
5. Fertilizing
Fertilizing should be carried out according to the weather conditions. In summer, when high temperatures persist, if the water source is insufficient, drip irrigation can be used, plus rice straw or stalks to increase humidity and lower the temperature. The key point of fertilizing lemon trees after fruiting should be placed after the flowers fade, which can increase fruit expansion and enhance the fruit's development energy.
2. What should you do if the leaves of a lemon tree turn yellow?
First, after flowering, yellowing leaves and leaf drop are generally caused by malnutrition. You can spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate. In addition to containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, this fertilizer also contains a large amount of trace elements. Usage: spray 0.3% on the leaf surface, and at the same time apply it to the soil in the pot, once every half month during the growing season.
Second, iron deficiency and nutrient deficiency yellowing cause lemon tree leaves to turn yellow. Supplement in a targeted way with fertilizers containing the deficient nutrient or iron.
Third, bark rot and a smell of distiller's grains generally mean that root rot causes lemon tree leaves to turn yellow. This is often caused by too much water accumulation in the pot or overly concentrated fertilizing. You can scrape off the diseased part together with a small amount of healthy tissue using a sharp knife, apply copper hydroxide at 100 times dilution or thiophanate-methyl at 200-300 times dilution to the scraped area, and cover with soil after the wound heals.
Fourth, if pests cause lemon tree leaves to turn yellow, then remove the pests manually or spray the corresponding pesticide.
