How to plant pear seeds? A detailed guide to growing pear trees from seed
At the mention of pears, everyone is surely familiar with them. They are not only juicy and sweet but also highly nutritious, and many people love to eat them. The leftover seeds can even be grown into potted plants, so how do you plant fruit seeds from a pear?
1. Collecting the seeds
Just use the pear core left after eating. Place the fresh pear core until the flesh becomes completely soft, then rinse it in water, rubbing gently with your fingers to wash away the flesh and other debris, leaving plump, flawless seeds. You can place the seeds on a mat or a clean cloth and put them in a shaded place to air-dry. This process is mostly carried out in autumn. After going through the winter, the seeds have a higher germination rate and survival rate.
2. Stratifying to sprout
(1) After drying, store them indoors in a storage room before the soil freezes, generally before November.
(2) Prepare a basin of sand, wet it with water, and mix it with the seeds in a ratio of three parts sand to one part seeds. Place it in a shaded storage room and spread another 10 cm of wet sand on top. This prevents the seeds from dehydrating and losing their vitality.
(3) After a winter, the wet sand will freeze. When the temperature rises again in spring and the sand thaws, this is the process of sprouting the seeds. During this period, it is best to stir them every day to prevent the seeds from becoming moldy or rotting due to the stuffy heat inside the sand. Keep the sand moist, but it must not be dripping wet; it is enough if it holds together when squeezed in the hand and crumbles apart when released.
After the stratification process, the seeds will gradually grow small sprouts, shown as white tips emerging. At this point, they can be sown in the soil.
3. Sowing method
Prepare several pots with good drainage and aeration, and plant the seeds at a depth of about 1 cm, one seed per pot. They will need to be transplanted later; this step is mainly for growing seedlings. Small seedlings will emerge in about 20 days.
4. Later care
(1) Keep the soil in the pot moist and place it in a spot with good sunlight. With careful attention, the sprouts grow into small seedlings, and once their growth is stable they can be planted in their permanent position.
(2) It takes about five years to mature, so you need to wait patiently.
