What season do lotus flowers generally bloom in?
Lotus also refers to the lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), the general name for two species in the genus Nelumbo, a perennial aquatic herbaceous flower of the genus Nelumbo. There are many varieties, divided into two major categories: ornamental and edible. So, what season do lotus flowers bloom in?
1. What season do lotus flowers bloom in
Lotus blooms in summer, with a flowering period from June to September. The flowers are borne singly at the tip of the pedicel, with numerous petals embedded in the pits of the receptacle, in colors such as red, pink, white and purple, or with colored markings and fringed edges. The nut is oval and the seed is ovate. At the same time, lotus is very sensitive to water loss. In summer, if it is not watered for just 3 hours, the lotus leaves grown in a water tank will wilt; if watering stops for one day, the edges of the lotus leaves will scorch and the flower buds will wither.
2. Lotus origin and habitat
Lotus is generally distributed in Central Asia, West Asia, North America, India, China, Japan and other subtropical and temperate regions. In China, lotus is found from Hainan Island in the south (around 19 degrees north latitude) to Fujin in Heilongjiang in the north (47.3 degrees north latitude), reaching Shanghai and Taiwan province in the east and the northern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains in the west. Except for the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai province, it is distributed in most parts of the country. Its vertical distribution can reach an altitude of 2000 m, and it can also be seen in the deep mountain pools and marshes of the Qinling Mountains and Shennongjia.
China was already cultivating it as early as more than 3,000 years ago, and carbonized ancient lotus seeds have been found in both Liaoning and Zhejiang, showing its long history. In the Taiwan region, however, it was only introduced from Japan 100 years ago. In Baihe Town in Tainan and the Chiayi area, the cultivation area has already reached nearly 350 hectares, and its scale has made it one of the most important tourist areas in Taiwan. Some remote places in Asia still have wild lotus, but most lotus is artificially cultivated.
