Ardisia crenata is a common potted ornamental plant. Because of its good symbolic meaning, many people grow it at home, so how do you plant Ardisia crenata seeds?

1. Growth habits of Ardisia crenata

Ardisia crenata is an evergreen dwarf shrub of the family Primulaceae and the genus Ardisia, also called iron umbrella, red cool umbrella, large luo umbrella, and so on. Ardisia crenata has a beautiful and elegant plant shape. Each plant has many small red fruits. The fruit color is bright red and dripping, each grain is uniform in color, and they do not fall for a long time, making it very beautiful.

The main planting production areas of Ardisia crenata are distributed in the mountainous areas of western Fujian, among which the artificial planting and cultivation technology in Wuping County, Longyan City, Fujian Province is the most mature. Dongliu Township in Wuping County is known as the “”hometown of Ardisia crenata“.

Ardisia crenata likes a warm and humid, half-sunny and half-shady environment. Its suitable growth temperature is 16°C to 28°C. It can also grow normally indoors at 5°C to 8°C, and in winter it can tolerate a low temperature of -4°C.

2. How do you plant Ardisia crenata seeds?

Before sowing, Ardisia crenata seeds need the hard seed coat to be rubbed and abraded, then soaked in warm water at 25-30°C for about 24 hours. After soaking, take out the seeds and broadcast them or sow them in holes on the seedbed. Generally, seedlings will emerge after two weeks.

During the growth process of Ardisia crenata, attention should also be paid to the prevention and control of pests and diseases. The diseases to watch for in Ardisia crenata are root (stem) rot and leaf spot.

The main causes of root rot are soil compaction, poor water permeability, improper watering, overly wet potting soil, improper fertilization, and so on. Conditions such as excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer, imbalance of plant nutrients, and lack of organic matter and potassium fertilizer will all aggravate its harm.

Therefore, in production, Ardisia crenata is best planted in places with higher terrain and good drainage, with good cultivation and prevention measures, disinfection of the substrate before planting or repotting, and reasonable watering and fertilization.
