What is the difference between spider plant and ribbon plant? A quick guide to tell them apart
The ribbon plant is also an ornamental plant, with delicate and soft leaves, and many people grow ribbon plants. But where is the difference between ribbon plant and spider plant?
1. The difference between spider plant and ribbon plant
Because the ribbon plant and the spider plant are very similar in color and plant form, the ribbon plant is often mistaken for a spider plant. However, if you observe carefully, you can still tell the two apart. Although the leaves of the ribbon plant are similar to those of the spider plant, the spider plant grows runners from the roots, and small plantlets grow on the runners, while the ribbon plant does not have this characteristic. And the thick, fleshy tuberous roots of the ribbon plant are something the spider plant does not have, which is also the best marker for distinguishing the two.
2. How to grow a spider plant?
1. Watering: The spider plant is different from other plant types; its roots are very large, so its ability to store water is relatively strong, and its drought resistance is good too. Therefore, just the right amount of water is enough for it to grow vigorously. Never give too much, otherwise the roots will rot instead, and the plant naturally cannot grow well.
2. Fertilizing: If you want the plant to grow vigorously, the nutrients in the soil alone are sometimes not enough, and some fertilizer needs to be applied. Organic fertilizer can be used, such as bone meal, eggshells and the like. The frequency is about once every one week to ten days. In this way, the plant not only grows vigorously, but the leaves also have luster.
3. Light: The spider plant itself likes partial shade. If you want it to grow vigorously, it needs semi-shade care and must not be exposed to too strong direct light. The specific shading level is about 50 to 70 percent. If grown at home, it can be placed behind a curtain.
3. How to grow a ribbon plant?
1. Temperature and light: The suitable temperature for ribbon plant growth is 22-28°C. If the temperature drops below 15°C, it will enter a dormant state, and the leaves will gradually turn yellow and wither. The ribbon plant likes ample diffused light, and strong direct sunlight should be avoided in summer.
2. Changing the water: In the early stage of water culture, the ribbon plant is prone to root rot, so the water needs to be changed every day and the rotted roots removed. When the root system adapts to the aquatic environment and no longer rots, change the water once every 2-3 days, and after water roots grow, changing the water once every 10-15 days is enough.
3. Fertilizing: Add nutrient solution when changing the water. When the ribbon plant grows relatively quickly, the nutrient solution should be increased to provide the nutrients needed for growth. When the weather is hot in summer, you can often spray water on the leaves to keep the air humid and the leaves clean.
The spider plant and the ribbon plant are similar in form. When buying flowers, you must identify them carefully to avoid being cheated.
