I. How to Plant Egg Fruit Seeds?
First, soak the seeds in clean water for 2-3 days. After the seeds sprout small buds, begin planting them in pots. Place the already sprouted seeds into the soil. In 5-6 days the new shoots will emerge from the soil.
II. How Do You Eat Egg Fruit?
Do not eat the skin and pit. Although it has little fragrance, the flesh is sweet and soft, similar in taste to mango, yellow-fleshed sweet potato, and cooked egg yolk. The fruit is spherical; when unripe it is green, and when ripe it is yellow-green to orange-yellow, smooth, with thin skin, orange-yellow flesh, rich in starch, with a texture like egg yolk and an aroma. Besides being eaten raw, the fruit can be made into jam, ice cream, beverages, or fruit wine. For unripe egg fruit, it is recommended not to eat it.
III. How to Make Egg Fruit Jam
Ingredients: egg fruit, fine granulated sugar, lemon juice.
Method:
1. Wash the egg fruit and wipe off the water, cut into small pieces with a knife, add fine granulated sugar, and mix evenly with chopsticks. Make the sugar adhere to the egg fruit.
2. Cover with plastic wrap, put in the refrigerator and chill for more than 3 hours. After the water seeps out, pour the egg fruit together with the seeped water into a pot, stir-fry continuously over high heat until the egg fruit becomes soft, then use medium heat to slowly reduce the water.
3. When stir-fried to a thick state, turn off the heat, add lemon juice, stir evenly, then put the jam into a clean container, seal and store in the refrigerator.
The genus Pouteria has 100 species, native to Malaysia, Australia, the Pacific Islands, and tropical America. In China, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan have introduced and cultivated 1 species.
