How to plant seeds from King Kong wax apple? Detailed planting method
King Kong wax apple is a variety of wax apple, currently cultivated in Linbian Township and Nanzhou Township of Pingtung County, Qinzhou in Guangxi, and other places. Its flesh is sweet, and the seeds in the middle can also be grown as potted plants. So how do you plant seeds from King Kong wax apple?
1. How to plant seeds from King Kong wax apple?
1. First pick a plump female fruit, eat the flesh, and keep the seeds in the middle.
2. Clean the seeds thoroughly and soak them in clean water, changing the water once a day.
3. Once the seeds sprout, they can be planted. The planting temperature should preferably be above 20 degrees; generally they will sprout in about half a month.
2. How to plant King Kong wax apple in open ground?
Wax apple propagation generally uses air layering, cuttings and sowing methods; after planting out, pruning and fertilizer and water management are carried out. The detailed steps are as follows:
1. Propagation
Air layering: This is the main method, generally carried out during the hot, humid rainy season from May to September each year. Select a well-developed branch about 3 cm in diameter, first make a ring cut about 3 cm long at the base, then wrap a mud ball mixed with moist soil and straw around the ring-cut area and above and below it, then wrap it with transparent adhesive tape, and tie the upper and lower ends tightly with nylon rope. After about 1 month, new roots grow from the upper part of the cut; after about 3 months, many new roots have grown, and the part below the roots is cut off to form an independent seedling. It is first heeled in at the nursery to continue growing, and planted out in the field the following spring.
Cuttings: Select 2-3 year old branches, 15-20 cm long, insert 2/3 into a sand bed, taking care to shade and keep moist; they root in 1-2 months. They can be planted in spring from February to April or in autumn from August to September. In areas with high temperatures, they can also be planted from November to December, with an initial spacing of 4x5 m, thinned to 8x8 m after several years.
2. Shaping and pruning
After planting out, keep one main trunk and cut off the upper part at 60 cm above the ground, removing all but a few auxiliary branches. If winter and spring fruit is to be produced, pruning must be carried out in February each year, cutting off all the leaves on the plant as well as diseased branches, dead branches, overly dense branches and leggy branches, leaving only two-year-old branches. If half-pruning is used, shading treatment must be adopted.
3. Fertilizer and water management
Wax apple has a high fertilizer requirement; apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer in the early stage, do not apply too much nitrogen fertilizer during flower bud differentiation, and apply heavy phosphorus and potassium fertilizer after the fruit is small. In some coastal areas, the soil salt content is too high; fresh water is used to wash the salt, reducing the soil salt content and promoting normal plant growth and fruiting.
4. Pest and disease control
Pay attention to attacks by pests and diseases such as anthracnose, fruit rot, scarab beetles, scale insects, tussock moths, aphids, bagworms and thrips, and spray the corresponding pesticides in time.
