What is the difference between evergreen turf and putting green grass?
Evergreen turf is native to the temperate zones of Eurasia and is widely used in courtyards, parks, plazas, playgrounds, football fields and golf courses. So what is the difference between evergreen turf and putting green grass?
1. The difference between evergreen turf and putting green grass
Evergreen turf is a cool-season lawn, generally used as ground cover in modern landscapes; ecological green spaces combining it with lawns are both attractive and environmentally friendly. Putting green grass is mostly warm-season lawn, a low-growing Bermuda grass. It is usually the grass planted on golf putting greens.
2. How is putting green grass maintained?
1. Weed control
Weeds come up together with the sown bentgrass seedlings, and there are more weeds with spring sowing than with autumn sowing. Weeds should be pulled early, following the rule of “pulling early, pulling small, pulling completely.
2. Reasonable fertilizing and watering
20 to 30 days after emergence, the lawn begins to enter a rapid growth period and its fertilizer demand increases greatly, so apply the first fertilizer, preferably a compound fertilizer. After sowing, the topsoil should be kept moist, watering once in the morning and once in the evening each day. Once the seedlings are fully up, watering once every morning is enough; on cloudy days with little wind, do not water.
3. Timely mowing
When the leaf canopy area reaches 100%, begin mowing. The first mowing should leave 2 cm, then gradually lower to 1 cm. Generally after 4 or more mowings, the stolons of the putting green grass begin to spread. The sand topdressing thickness should be just enough to expose the grass tips.
4. Regular sand topdressing
Sand topdressing on the putting green keeps the surface level, presses down the stolons of the putting green grass, encourages new roots, and separates the growing parts from the thatch layer, reducing the chance of disease.
5. Winter management
After the onset of winter, spray Bordeaux mixture once. When frost is severe in the morning, water to remove the frost. The key to putting green grass surviving the winter safely is how to keep the putting green moist; as long as you can water thoroughly once a week, not covering it is fine.
Putting green grass is a variety selected from the segregating first filial generation after crossing African Bermuda grass with common Bermuda grass.
