What Is the Difference Between Azaleas and Camellias? A Quick Guide to Telling Them Apart
Azaleas, also known as yingshanhong or wild pomegranate, are evergreen or semi-evergreen shrubs. Azaleas generally bloom in spring and are a typical indicator plant of acidic soil in south-central and southwestern China. Today we will explain the differences between azaleas and camellias.
1. Differences between azaleas and camellias
Azalea petals are very small, with only five petals; camellia petals are numerous, layer upon layer. The stamens of azaleas have white or black dots; the stamens of camellias are golden yellow.
2. Camellia Propagation Methods
1. Cuttings
Cuttings are the simplest method, and September is the most suitable time for taking them. Choose a well-grown, semi-lignified branch, remove the lower leaves, keep the upper 3 leaves, cut a slanted opening with a sharp knife, immediately dip the cut end in indolebutyric acid for 5-15 minutes, dry it, then insert it into a sand pot or vermiculite pot. Water after inserting; the wound heals in about 40 days and roots form in about 60 days.
2. Leaf cuttings
Leaf cutting method: camellia propagation generally uses stem cuttings, but some rare varieties, due to limited sources of branches or because taking cuttings would affect their tree shape, also use the leaf cutting method. Use mountain soil as the cutting medium, mix in 1/3 river sand, put the medium in a clay pot, and then carry out pot cutting.
3. Air layering
The biggest feature of the air layering method is that it can give new life to all the weak, small branches on a camellia that would otherwise be pruned off. This method also has a high survival rate, quick rejuvenation, and early flowering. On the weak, thin branches that need to be pruned off, perform ring barking at an appropriate position; the ring bark length can be between 5-8 mm. Tie on plastic film of an appropriate size, add sterilized and disinfected peat moss or leaf mold inside the film, and after 7-10 days, perform another ring bark of 5-8 mm on the lower part of the plastic film.
The azalea corolla is bright red. It is a famous ornamental flowering plant with high ornamental value and is cultivated in parks all over the world.
