How many years after planting does a peach tree need before it bears fruit?
The peach tree is a small deciduous tree whose fruit is eaten as a fruit; its flowers are ornamental, and its fruit is juicy and can be eaten fresh or made into peach preserves, canned peaches, and so on. So, do you know how many years a peach tree needs to be planted before it bears fruit?
1. How many years does a peach tree need to be planted before it bears fruit?
A peach tree generally begins to bear fruit 3 years after planting, with 4-15 years being the full-bearing period; the flowering period is from March to April each year, and the fruit ripening period is from August to September each year. Of course, depending on the climate and the variety planted in each place, the fruit ripening period will differ.
2. Propagation methods of peach trees
1. Cuttage
In spring, use hardwood cuttings; in the plum rain season, use softwood cuttings. The cuttings must be vigorous and plump. Hardwood cuttings are mainly taken in spring, and the cuttings are cut obliquely to about 20 cm; to prevent disease infection and promote rooting, the lower end of the cutting is best treated with the fungicide 50% carbendazim at 600-1200 times dilution, quickly dipped in 750-4500 mg/L indolebutyric acid, and then inserted for cuttage, with a plant-row spacing of 4 cm × 30 cm, and a insertion depth of preferably 2/3 of the length of the cutting.
2. Grafting
For propagation, the rootstock is mostly wild peach or peach seedlings (own rootstock); the survival rates of both twig grafting and bud grafting are relatively high.
Twig grafting: carried out in March when the buds have begun to sprout. Cut grafting is commonly used, and one- or two-year-old seedlings are best used as the rootstock.
Bud grafting: carried out in July-August, mostly using the “T” shape graft. One-year-old plump seedlings are best used as the rootstock.
3. Sowing
The flowering period of the peach is March-April, and the fruit ripening period is June-August. Harvest the ripe fruit, pile it up and mash it, remove the flesh, dry it, and collect the pure seedling seeds for autumn sowing. Before sowing, soak the seeds for 5-7 days. Autumn-sown seeds sprout early the following year, have a high emergence rate, and grow rapidly and vigorously. For sowing the following spring, the seedling seeds need to be stored in wet sand for more than 120 days. Drill sowing is used, with a row width of 10 cm and a depth of 1-2 cm, and after sowing cover with 6 cm of soil. Sow 25-30 kg of seeds per 667 sq m. When the seedlings are 3 cm tall, thin and finalize them, with a plant spacing of 20-25 cm.
If you want the fruit borne by the peach tree to be large and sweet, during the planting process you must do a good job with water and fertilizer management, pruning, pest and disease control, and so on.
