Perilla is mainly distributed in China's Jiangxi, Tieling in Liaoning, Taiwan, China, Hunan and other central-southern regions. Today, the editor wants to introduce to you how to grow perilla seeds. Let's take a look together!

1. How to Grow Perilla Seeds

Perilla seeds are small, with a thousand-grain weight of only 3-4g. Before sowing, the seeds should be strictly subjected to manual winnowing to remove shriveled grains, damaged grains and impurities. Choose flat loam soil and rake and harrow it finely. Seed germination and sprouting require an accumulated temperature of 50-75°C; within a daily average temperature range of 11.54-28.12°C, sowing is generally done from Qingming to Guyu. Open shallow furrows 2-3cm deep at a row spacing of 25cm, evenly scatter the seeds into the furrows, cover with a thin layer of soil and press down lightly.

2. Perilla Harvest Period

1. Perilla generally matures in autumn. After the perilla fruit ripens, it sheds its seeds very easily, and seed shedding is even more serious especially on windy days and when sparrows peck at and eat them. For this reason, harvesting at the right time is crucial. Harvesting too early results in poor seed maturity, low yield and low oil content in the seeds, while harvesting too late also causes serious seed shedding and reduces yield. The best harvest period is generally from late September to early October, around Cold Dew according to the solar terms.

2. The biological characteristics of its maturity are that the perilla stems turn yellow, most leaves fall off, and the corolla and calyx tube turn yellow and shrink. When harvesting, tie them into small bundles, generally five or six plants per small bundle, and stack them upright so they can dry faster. During harvesting and threshing, mechanical threshing or manual threshing can be used. After threshing, screen and reduce moisture in time; once the moisture content is below 9%, they can be stored in the warehouse.
