How do you plant hawthorn seeds so they sprout quickly?
Hawthorn, also known as mountain fruit, mountain red, sour red, sour jujube, mountain forest fruit and so on, has sweet and sour, tasty fruit and helps strengthen the stomach and aid digestion. And after eating the flesh, the seeds inside can still be planted. So how do you plant hawthorn seeds quickly?
1. How do you plant hawthorn seeds quickly?
First pick the seeds out of ripe hawthorn fruit, then wash them clean with water. Then put them in moist sandy soil to sprout, and wait until the spring of the following year to take them out for sowing. The seeds, once taken out, are sown directly in the potting soil, and a suitable amount of water is all that is needed.
2. How do you care for a potted hawthorn?
1. Potting soil
For a potted hawthorn tree, the flower pot should be a clay pot with a diameter of 30-40 cm and a depth of 30 cm with good air permeability, or a wooden bucket, wooden box or the like of comparable size. The nutrient soil in the pot is prepared from leaf mold or humus soil, garden soil and sand in a 4:4:2 ratio.
2. Light
Hawthorn is a light-loving tree species, and insufficient sunlight will cause thin, weak branches, thin leaves, pale color and poor fruit set. Therefore, it should be placed in a sunny, well-ventilated spot for care and management.
3. Watering
Hawthorn is relatively drought-tolerant, and trees that have not yet fruited are not strict about water requirements, but a potted specimen that has set fruit must be guaranteed a sufficient supply of water. Keep the pot moist as the standard, and avoid waterlogging; in autumn, control the amount of watering, while in winter it is better to keep it dry than wet.
4. Fertilizing
Hawthorn tolerates poor soil and is not especially fond of fertilizer; apply a base fertilizer once in winter, and not too much, so as to avoid excessive vegetative growth. After flowering, apply a dilute phosphorus-potassium fertilizer once, and do not apply nitrogen fertilizer. In autumn, apply an appropriate amount of fertilizer. At full bloom, you can ring-bark strong trees and vigorous branches and spray gibberellin, which can increase the fruit-setting rate. Pay attention to preventing and controlling the common powdery mildew, red spider mite and aphid diseases.
5. Pruning
Young hawthorn trees have strong apical dominance and fewer side branches. Therefore, when the tree is young, it should be pruned often to encourage more branching, and from mid-July to early August, during the flower bud differentiation period, the tree can be ring-cut or ring-girdled to promote flower bud differentiation.
For potted hawthorn cultivation, it is best to choose varieties with late-ripening fruit, large fruit shape, bright red color and strong cold resistance, so that the difficulty of caring for them will also be much lower.
