How to Plant White Onion Seeds? A Detailed Guide to the Planting Method
Onion is a seasoning we often use in daily life. It has various effects in dietary therapy for treating illnesses, and it is also a health-care medicinal vegetable. White onion seeds are the seeds of onion. So, do you know how to plant white onion seeds?
1. Land preparation
Onion is suitable for growing in flat, fertile plots close to a water source with convenient drainage, so when choosing land, try to choose fertile soil with convenient drainage for planting. After choosing the land, deep-plow the soil, and apply 50 kg of compound fertilizer per mu as base fertilizer, 2.5 kg of carbofuran, and 0.5 kg of carbendazim powder to kill underground pests and pathogens.
2. Sowing
Take out the covering soil from the seedbed, then irrigate the seedbed fully until the water has completely seeped in. Mix the white onion seeds with sandy soil, sow them twice in the seedbed, and finally cover with soil at a thickness of 1.5-2 cm. The seeding rate for a seedling field is 1.3 kg per mu, which can be transplanted to 3-5 mu.
3. Field planting
Summer-sown onion is planted in early to mid-September, and autumn-sown onion is planted in March to April of the following year. Open furrows for planting with a row spacing of 80 cm and a plant spacing of 1.5-2 cm. Before planting, strictly grade the onion seedlings, then carry out chemical treatment to eliminate root maggots and ensure a full stand.
4. Field management
Watering: After field planting, the core of management for onion is to promote rooting, so watering should be controlled; drain water after rain to prevent waterlogging, and prevent root rot, yellow leaves, and dead seedlings. If it rains continuously after transplanting, it will cause root rot and dead seedlings, so pay attention to timely drainage. In case of high temperature and drought, water to lower the temperature.
Topdressing: After the Start of Autumn, apply a “leaf-promoting fertilizer”, with 1500-2000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure and 20-25 kg of superphosphate per mu. After White Dew, apply a “plant-promoting fertilizer” twice combined with watering, each time with 15-20 kg of urea and 10-15 kg of potassium sulfate per mu.
Earthing up: Earthing up is an important measure to soften the leaf sheaths, prevent lodging, and improve the yield and quality of the white onion stalk. From the Start of Autumn to before harvest, generally earth up three times; the first two times are combined with intertillage, banking the ridge soil into the onion furrow, and after the End of Heat, fill the furrow level.
During the sowing process of white onion seeds, note that it is suitable to plant in loose, fertile loam and heavy loam plots with convenient irrigation and drainage, and it is not suitable to plant in sandy plots. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and trace elements need to be supplied in a balanced way, and nitrogen fertilizer cannot be applied alone.
