Jackfruit is what we commonly call "boluomi" (jackfruit); this plant is widely cultivated in the coastal areas of China where it is grown for food. The jackfruit's fruit is extremely large, generally weighing 8 kg to 10 kg, and at most reaching 15 kg to 20 kg, making it the king of the largest fruits. Many friends, after eating jackfruit, want to use the jackfruit seeds to cultivate it themselves, so how do you plant jackfruit seeds?

1. How to plant jackfruit seeds

Jackfruit can be planted, but its seeds have an extremely low germination rate, generally around 15-25%. When planting jackfruit seeds, you must first choose a well-drained humus sandy soil, use ripe fresh fruit, take out the seeds and sow them immediately, and select a 50CM wide-mouth pot; they can sprout after about 2 to 3 weeks. Jackfruit is loosely managed; spring and summer are the peak growth periods, apply fertilizer once every 1 to 2 months, and fully supply water. Jackfruit likes high temperature and high humidity, and the suitable growth temperature is 22 to 23°C. It does not tolerate transplanting, so when moving it to the ground, do not damage the roots.

The probability of a jackfruit grown from seed flowering and fruiting is also very small; it may never flower or fruit in its whole life. When planting jackfruit, if you are not prepared for this, it is best to use grafted jackfruit seedlings; grafted jackfruit seedlings grow quickly and have fewer pests and diseases, making them a better choice than seed planting.

2. The benefits of jackfruit

The benefits of jackfruit are very diverse. Besides being eaten directly after ripening, the green unripe fruit can be eaten as a vegetable. In some areas of southern China, people often use honey and jackfruit fruit to soak jackfruit wine. During the thousands of years of development of traditional Chinese medicine in China, jackfruit has also been used medicinally. Li Shizhen of the Ming Dynasty also recorded in the “Compendium of Materia Medica”: “Jackfruit is sweet and fragrant…… it can quench thirst and relieve restlessness, invigorate the spleen and boost qi.” Modern pharmacology has proven that regularly eating jackfruit can strengthen the hydrolysis of fibrin in the body, and can dissolve fibrin and blood clots blocking tissues and blood vessels, thereby improving local blood flow and eliminating inflammation.

Jackfruit is not easy to plant, so friends who are not patient are best off buying a jackfruit at the market and eating it directly.
