How to Grow Scallions from Seed? Detailed Guide to Sowing Methods and Precautions
Scallion, also known as shallot, is a common vegetable in southern regions, mainly used for seasoning or removing fishy smells. Because it is cold-tolerant and heat-tolerant, it is very easy to grow. So how do you grow scallions from seed?
1. Planting time
Scallions are generally best planted in spring. They can germinate normally at 13°C-20°C, and the suitable temperature for plant growth is 10°C-25°C. If the temperature is higher than 28°C, scallions will grow very slowly. Spring is also the easiest time to plant scallions, and the yield will be large. Scallions can also be planted in autumn, usually in September-October. Because the temperature difference in autumn is large, the roots of scallions can fully absorb nutrients. Autumn scallions are also the most nutritious and have a very good taste.
2. Seed selection and germination
When planting scallions, generally choose clean, plump seeds for the highest survival rate, then place them on the surface of the growing soil, cover the surface with a thin layer of soil, water thoroughly, and keep them in a dark greenhouse. They will germinate after about 2 weeks.
3. Soil preparation and management
Scallions prefer loose, fertile soil with good drainage. Generally, mix rotted leaf soil, pond mud, river sand, and manure soil in a ratio of 2:2:1:2, then pour in a small amount of water. It is best to keep the soil slightly moist, then apply a small amount of decomposed organic fertilizer as a base.
4. Planting management
Scatter the germinated seedlings into the soil separately, with the sprouting end facing downward, keeping a spacing of about 10cm, then cover the surface with 1-2cm of thin soil, and then water with an appropriate amount of water.
5. Fertilizer and water management
After planting, it is best to ensure they are not exposed to strong light for a long time. Shade treatment can be carried out appropriately, and the soil should be loosened irregularly. Water once every 1-3 days, and add organic fertilizer solution once about every 15 days.
6. Disease and pest prevention
Common diseases during the growth stage of scallions include downy mildew and soft rot. It is best to remove impurities from the soil once a month, then carry out disinfection treatment. Solar insecticidal lamps can be used for prevention.
