Sand ginger is a plant with a relatively crisp texture, a white cut surface, and a distinctive fragrance. It also has certain medicinal value, helping to promote digestion and relieve pain. Sand ginger is mainly distributed in Guangdong and Guangxi, Yunnan, Taiwan, China, and other parts of our country, and it has relatively high requirements for soil. Let us take a look below at the planting time and methods for the annual herbaceous plant sand ginger.

I. Planting time for sand ginger

Sand ginger is a variety that is not cold-tolerant, so the planting time is very important. Generally, areas with relatively high temperatures choose to plant in late March, while places with relatively low temperatures can delay it a little and choose April or May.

II. Planting methods for sand ginger

1. Site selection

Site selection for planting sand ginger is one of the reasons related to high yield. Generally, paddy fields, dry land, and sloping land are all relatively suitable. In addition, places with a mild climate, abundant rainfall, and short sunshine duration should also be chosen.

2. Soil requirements

Sand ginger cultivation has relatively high soil requirements. The soil must be deep, well-drained, highly loose, and good at retaining fertilizer.

3. Land preparation

After choosing a good location, plowing must be carried out for overwintering, and planting can only be done after the soil layer has weathered. When plowing the soil, pay attention to disinfecting and sterilizing the soil, which can reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases.

4. Seed selection

The selection of sand ginger seed is very important. Not only must the size be suitable, the seed coat thin, and the texture hard, but only fully mature ones that have not been attacked by disease can be used as seed.

After harvesting sand ginger in winter, choose to dry it in the sun for one week, then store it indoors in a well-ventilated place where quicklime has been scattered. Spread the sand ginger out flat, and it must not be too thick. The room must be kept ventilated and breathable frequently so that the sand ginger stays dry and does not develop pests.

Before planting sand ginger, formalin must be used for disinfection measures, and the disinfection time should be kept at around twenty minutes.

5. Planting

In order for sand ginger to obtain high yield, density can be used, but it must not be too dense. Keep a row spacing of about 20*17 cm. After planting sand ginger, cover it with fine soil.

6. Fertilization

When planting sand ginger, in addition to providing sufficient base fertilizer, it is also necessary to additionally apply compound fertilizer, decomposed farmyard manure, and so on as a top dressing. Fertilization must be reasonable, especially during the seedling emergence period. Pay attention to the amount of fertilizer used, and choose watering fertilization and foliar fertilization. After October, the amount of fertilizer applied can be increased.

7. Watering

When watering sand ginger, pay attention to watering reasonably according to its growth stage, soil moisture, season, and so on. There must not be drought or waterlogging, as both are harmful to the growth of sand ginger.

8. Replanting to fill gaps

After sand ginger emerges, pay attention to checking the seedlings and filling gaps to ensure that the replanted sand ginger seedlings maintain consistent growth with the whole crop. If the soil is compacted, loosen the soil in time, which is beneficial for seedling emergence.
