What is the difference between Shujincao and Shenjincao?
Shujincao and Shenjincao look very similar on the surface, making it very easy for people to be unable to tell them apart. Both can treat wind-dampness arthralgia, lumbar muscle strain, and traumatic injuries. So what are the differences between Shujincao and Shenjincao?
1. Introduction to Shujincao
Shujincao, proper name: Lycopodium casuarinoides, also known as Shiziteng, Shiziteng Shisong, and other names, belongs to the order Lycopodiales, family Lycopodiaceae, and is a large terrestrial plant. The aboveground main stem is woody and vine-like, extending and climbing up to several meters, cylindrical, with leaves arranged spirally, appressed, ovate-lanceolate to subulate. It is harvested in summer and autumn, and used fresh or dried in the sun. It grows in areas under forests, at forest margins, under shrubs, or by ditches at altitudes of 100-3100 m, and is distributed in most provinces and regions of East China, South China, Central China, and Southwest China.
2. Introduction to Shenjincao
The creeping stem is slender and cylindrical, slightly curved, up to 2 m long, 1-3 mm in diameter, with yellowish-white fine roots beneath it. The erect stem branches dichotomously. The leaves are densely borne on the stem, arranged spirally, wrinkled and curved, linear or needle-shaped, 3-5 mm long, yellow-green to pale yellow-brown, hairless, with an awn-like apex, entire margins, and easily broken. The texture is soft; the bark in cross-section is light yellow, and the wood is off-white. Odorless, bland taste.
3. Functions and indications
1. Shujincao: Dispels wind and removes dampness; relaxes the sinews and invigorates the blood; improves eyesight; resolves toxins. Mainly indicated for wind-dampness arthralgia, lumbar muscle strain, traumatic injuries, irregular menstruation in women, night sweats, conjunctivitis, night blindness, scalds and burns from water and fire, sores and swellings with toxin, anti-inflammatory and dampness-removing effects, and fever from exogenous pathogens in children.
2. Shenjincao: Wind-cold-dampness arthralgia, limb weakness and numbness; traumatic injuries; treats joint pain.
