There are many varieties of chili peppers, and they are one of the indispensable ingredients in daily life in many places, especially in Sichuan, Hunan and other regions, where no meal is complete without heat. Chili peppers are grown in many parts of our country, and their requirements for the growing environment are not very high, so they can generally survive. The growing methods for chili peppers include open-field and greenhouse cultivation. Recently a friend asked, Can you grow chili peppers on a balcony? Why do they fail to fruit?

1. Can you grow chili peppers on a balcony?

Chili peppers can be grown on a balcony. As long as you master the correct growing methods and care points, they will generally survive.

1. Buying chili pepper seeds

If you are growing chili peppers on a balcony, it depends on which variety you want to grow, whether it is facing-heaven chili or an ordinary chili pepper. Once you have bought the seeds, you can sow them.

Before sowing, the chili pepper seeds should be soaked in advance to promote germination and increase the germination rate.

If you sow when the temperature is relatively low, place the chili pepper seeds in a flower pot, cover them with a thin layer of soil, water thoroughly to settle the roots, and put a plastic bag or cling film over the pot to keep it warm. Remember, you must make a small opening to allow air through, and once the seeds have sprouted, open or remove the cling film.

2. Base fertilizer

Growing chili peppers in flower pots is very different from growing them in open fields, because the pot is not large, so enough base fertilizer must be applied to meet their growth needs. You can choose rotted peanut cake or rotted chicken manure as the base fertilizer, buried at the bottom of the pot, to promote growth.

The pot for growing chili peppers should be chosen with a diameter of more than 20 cm, and at most one or two chili pepper seedlings should be grown per pot.

3. Soil requirements

The soil for growing chili peppers can be ordinary vegetable garden soil. Of course, soil with good looseness, strong drainage and good water retention will produce a higher yield.

4. Transplanting

When the chili pepper seedlings have grown four or five true leaves, they can be transplanted. When transplanting, it is best to keep the soil around the roots and not damage the root system.

5. Pinching

When the chili pepper seedlings have grown to over ten cm, you can pinch off the growing point at the top to encourage side branches to sprout, so the chili pepper yield will be higher.

2. Why do balcony chili peppers fail to fruit?

1. Insufficient light

Growing chili peppers on a balcony requires sufficient light. Otherwise, without sunlight the branches may grow leggy, and the nutrients during the fruiting period will be completely insufficient, so naturally they will not fruit. Place the chili peppers in a position with relatively sufficient light. Apart from giving them a little shade during the hottest time around noon, let them receive full sunlight at other times, maintaining at least about three hours a day, so they can grow stronger and bear more fruit.

2. No pinching

When caring for balcony chili peppers, if the growing tips are not pinched off in time, it is difficult for more branches to grow, and it is hard to produce a large number of fruits.

3. Insufficient fertilizer

If sufficient base fertilizer is not placed in the pot, it leads to a lack of nutrients for subsequent growth and the failure to fruit.
