Its plant form is very elegant, and its flowers are large and beautiful, making it popular among many flower enthusiasts, who often keep medinilla as a potted plant in living rooms, halls and other places to accent the home environment. But how do you grow this beautiful flowering plant? What precautions are there?

How to Grow Medinilla

1. Soil

Medinilla likes slightly acidic soil rich in humus, loose and well-drained. Adding coarse peat mixed with soil can make it grow better. Repotting should be done every spring, adding an appropriate amount of new soil and keeping the soil moist.

2. Temperature

Medinilla is suited to growing in a semi-shaded environment with high temperature, high humidity and scattered light. In summer it must not be exposed to direct sunlight and needs a shade net added, while in early spring and winter it needs sufficient light. Its optimal growing temperature should be kept at 19-21°C, no lower than 16°C in winter, and the humidity should always be kept at around 80%.

3. Watering

During the growing period, medinilla needs the potting soil kept moist; it can neither be drought-stressed nor waterlogged. When the temperature is below 20°C, water after the surface of the substrate has dried. Note that when medinilla is in bloom, it should not be watered frequently, as this will cause flowers to drop and shorten the flowering period. In summer, besides normal watering, also frequently spray water on the plant and around it to increase humidity, which can also wash dust off the leaf surface.

4. Pest and Disease Control

When medinilla develops diseases such as leaf spot and stem rot, spray with a 1000-fold dilution of 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder. For pests such as whitefly and scale insects, spray with a 1000-fold dilution of 50% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate.

Medinilla Cultivation Methods and Precautions

I. Cultivation Methods

1. Growing temperature

Because medinilla is a tropical plant, the suitable growing temperature for medinilla is relatively high. Take special care in winter to ensure the growing temperature for medinilla stays at around 16°C.

2. Growing environment

Medinilla is a plant that likes a damp, cool environment, but it is not cold-tolerant. In winter, pay attention to maintaining the temperature, and take special care that medinilla must not be exposed to scorching sun.

3. Growing soil

The growing soil for medinilla must be fertile, loose leaf mold or peat soil; only a good soil environment can allow medinilla to grow well.

II. Precautions

During the flowering period of medinilla, be sure not to water it too much, otherwise flowers will drop; when the buds of medinilla change color, place the medinilla in a warmer environment, otherwise the buds will drop. A major point in growing medinilla is forcing flowers. Medinilla normally flowers from January to May. If grown in a greenhouse, flowers can be forced all year round, but if you want to force flowers after June and July, you must control the temperature well, otherwise the buds will fail to open.

What Propagation Methods Does Medinilla Have

I. Cutting Propagation

1. Time

April-August and September-November are both relatively suitable times for cutting medinilla. Generally speaking, cuttings taken from April to August have a higher survival rate.

2. Cuttings

The cuttings for medinilla should be semi-lignified shoots with leaves at the tip, taken from a healthy growing plant.

3. Substrate

The substrate for medinilla cuttings is best a mixed substrate; if conditions are limited, a pure sand substrate can also be used. 4. Work after Inserting

After cutting is completed, press the potting soil firm, water an appropriate amount, and cover a layer of shade net above the medinilla; after about 60 days it can be potted up.

II. Seed Propagation

Medinilla seed propagation can use the method of sowing as soon as seeds are collected, but mature medinilla seeds are very hard to obtain, so up to now, medinilla propagation is mainly by cuttings.

How to Care for Medinilla in Winter

1. Light

Medinilla likes to grow in an environment with sufficient sunlight, so in winter, be sure to let medinilla get plenty of sun, but do not expose it to scorching sun.

2. Watering

In winter, try not to water medinilla too much. If watered too much and the temperature is not high enough, it is easy to cause cold damage to the plant, make the soil poorly aerated, cause root rot, and thereby cause the whole plant to die. Note that when the plant's buds begin to change color, place the plant in a warmer environment to prevent the buds from dropping.

3. Temperature

Medinilla is a tropical plant, so it relatively likes a warm, humid environment and likes a cool environment. It is not cold-tolerant and cannot be exposed to scorching sun. It needs fertile soil to support its growth. The temperature must be kept above 15°C for medinilla to maintain normal growth.

4. Propagation

In the first winter after propagation, be sure to pay attention to plant maintenance and do not let it suffer cold damage.

Medinilla is a plant that grows in tropical rainforest regions and likes a high-temperature, fertile growing environment, so growing medinilla is not very difficult; it is just that its cold resistance is relatively poor, and more attention needs to be paid in this respect, especially in the winter in northern China.
